Program Description

During the pandemic, Slyvie started to go for long walks in her area, picking up plastic debris along the way. This gave her time to think about ongoing projects and future ones. Several installations were created. She thought about the effect of stress on the body and especially about ecoanxiety. She looked at the chemical structure of the hormones of wellbeing (Four of my Favorite Things), the nervous system (Vagus and Together), the lunar cycle-body connection (Healing Hands) and the power of regeneration in the body (Ren).

Artist Information

Sylvie Rouselle grew up in Quebec and now lives in the Fraser Valley. Living in the traditional and unceded territory of the Stó: lō people made her appreciate Indigenous culture and world view. She lives on the south side of Chilliwack Mountain at the interface of nature and industrial land, with the huge cedars behind her acting as a constant reminder of the importance of nature in our modern life. She is influenced by traditional ways of making things: the needle work of her grandmothers, quilt making of her French ancestors, Celtic and Polynesian design, west coast cedar bark basketry and more. Sylvie believes we must be gentle with the earth and think about how to live, consume, and work the right way, which is evident in her practice. Using recycled textiles and plastic in non-traditional ways, she combines power tools and embroidery while often integrating light to wall pieces and installations. The use of new material is limited, and she chooses to reuse, transform, and repurpose materials, ideas and even past art projects. In the 18th century, Antoine Lavoisier said: “Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed”.  She finds joy in the repetition of the hundreds of punctures and stitches that are part of the creative process and believes in the power of repair.
